Introduction

Votes in the United Nations are counted with one vote per country. However, if we want true democracy it would be better the weight of a vote would be defined by the number of people of that country.

So I downloaded date from the World Bank here and am playing with it now. Latest data is from the year 2020.

Voting power summary

Total population of the world in 2020 according to theĀ  World Bank was about 7.7 billion people.

Some important countries/blocks here:

China: 1.4 billion
India: 1.4 billion
European Union: 447 million
United States: 330 million
Nigeria: 206 million
Russia: 144 million
South Africa: 59 million
Ukraine: 44 million

So while writing I noticed some things:

  • China only has a little larger population than India (rounding makes it the same already here). I thought China had a much larger population.
  • The United States is supposed to be the ‘biggest’ country in the world. However, the population of the United Stats is only 12% of the population of China and India together. Talking about democracy…
  • The European Union has more citizens than the United States. So why is the European Union listening to the United States so much.
  • Russia is bigger than I thought, having a little less than half of the population of the United States.
